Shrewsbury Crew is in its 75th year of existence!

The FOSC (Friends of Shrewsbury Crew) has started a fundraising campaign to update and supplement some of the rowing equipment. Although we have had very generous donations over the past decades, additional equipment is still needed.

One way to help our program is to buy an inch of the boat for $50. The cost of a new boat is $35,700. Another option is donating an oar, which cost $300 each. Please see the form (below) for our donation options. In addition, a tax receipt will be made out for anyone making a donation during this campaign, if requested.

In the Fall of 2012, on the Spirit of Shrewsbury weekend, we will hold our gala celebration for our 75 years of history. Currently, preliminary planning includes:

An open house at the DRC on Friday night. From 7-10pm we will welcome out of town guests and renew old acquaintances.

A Saturday morning race. At 10am our present crews will host and compete in a small invitational regatta for some of the area schools. All are welcome to attend and cheer on our crews.

A cookout around noon on Saturday. After the cookout, we will offer a learn-to-row session for interested friends and family members, and a chance for alumni crews to get back in the boat and have 500m races from 290 to the DRC.

The Spirit of Shrewsbury Parade on Sunday. Anyone wanting to march with the shell carrier and crew is welcome to join us!

We need your help!

We are trying to track down everyone who has rowed for Shrewsbury Crew so they can join their teammates in celebrating our Diamond Jubilee. If you are in contact with any former rowers, please ask if they have heard from us. If not, have them contact Coach Krause at SHS, 64 Holden Street, Shrewsbury, MA 01545. We can also be reached at www.shrewsburycrew.org, where anyone can send the coaches an email with their information. Another place for contact is on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ShrewsburyCrew. We look forward to re-connecting with as many Shrewsbury alumni as possible!

My grandfather, Ken Burns, would have been very happy that the program has grown and flourished, with so much support from former oarsmen and community members.

Hoping to hear from you soon. Thank you, Pamela Krause, Head Coach of Girls Crew

Fundraising Plans for 2012

Go FOSC and Shrewsbury Crew!

1) Our annual Calendar Raffle will be sold in April to be drawn each day in May. You can check our website at shrewsburycrew.org for details and purchase options. There is usually a good bit of excitement around our fantastic calendar offerings, and a chance to win 31 times!

2) Blankets for sale! To commemorate our 75th year we have nylon backed folding fleece blankets for sale on our website. Great to throw in the car for emergencies, bring to a race or picnic, or just wrap up in!

3) Inches and Oars for sale. We are selling an inch of the shell for $50. This would entitle the donor to have their initials printed on the side of the boat under the gunnels. Example: initials “A.B.C.”. If a donor wants to print out a whole name, it would be at the price of $50 per inch for 3-6 letters and or spaces. For example “Albert B. Cunningham” would be $200 for the donation, because it takes up about 4 inches. If the year of graduation were to be added, it would be an additional $50 for “ ’37”. Oars are also available to purchase for our program (for any non-rowers: we need 8 oars for each shell to be able to row).

The Shrewsbury High School Boosters Club has set up an account for this fundraising event, with all money raised going into a specific crew account held for us for the purchase of the shell, and possibly oars and electronics to go with it. All checks can be made out to the SHS Boosters and sent to Coach Krause at Shrewsbury High, 64 Holden Street, Shrewsbury, MA 01545. Please note “SHS Crew” in the memo section of your check.

I would like to buy __________ inches of the boat at $50 per inch*.

A set of 3 initials will fit in the inch space.

Initials in the order that you want them to appear: _______________

AND/OR Name as you would like it to appear on the gunnel: ___________________

_____________________________________________________________

I would rather support the crew team with the purchase of an oar at $300 each*:

# oars___________ for a total of $____________

Open donation (any amount will help us, thank you) $___________________

Enclosed is my check made out to the SHS Boosters for $________________

*Please send all check, made out to:

SHS Boosters, to Coach Pam Krause at Shrewsbury High School, 64 Holden Street, Shrewsbury, MA 01545.

On Saturday, March 31 at the DRC, the SHS crew program christened two new Vespoli 8 shells for our boys’ and girls’ crew teams. The boys’ shell was generously donated by the Donahue family, and named “Dare to Dream” in loving memory of Mrs. Barbara Donahue’s late husband Jim. ”Dare to Dream” was Jim’s favorite saying. The Donahue family has been one of the main contributors to our program in recent years. In 1996 we were awarded two fiberglass 8’s, the Jim and the Babs. In 1997, the Sue and the Judy were added, along with the Ken Burns, and a shell from Fitz Coghlin, Jim’s friend and teammate. The family of Clink Miner donated a shell shortly thereafter. Three years ago, Babs replaced the Sue with a new boat.

Additionally, the Friends of Shrewsbury Crew and the SHS Boosters club matched Mrs. Donahue’s generous gift with a matching shell for our girls’ team. The girls’ shell is named the “Judith Linnea Donahue ‘68” in tribute to Mrs. Donahue’s daughter Judy, who is a former SHS athlete, graduate of the Class of 1968, and is a driving force behind the SHS Alumni Association. It was an outstanding event that highlighted how our community can come together to support our student athletes.

November 2011 – Pam Krause is being recognized for her years of dedication and success as a coach at SHS as well as her success as an athlete. She has been coaching for a remarkable 33 years and has no intention of stopping anytime soon.

Pam, Class of 1969, was Captain of the Basketball and Field Hockey teams. They were the only sports, other than cheering, that were offered for girls. She was a four-year member of the Varsity Field Hockey team and played Varsity Basketball as a junior and senior. She was awarded the MVP for both sports in her senior year as well as an Athletic Award for the highest ranking senior girl in the class. Because there was no girls Crew team at SHS at the time, Pam rowed in the Bay State Games. After graduation she attended Bridgewater State College where she played Field Hockey all four years. She refereed Field Hockey for almost 10 years and Basketball for a couple of years.

As a young woman, Pam followed her passion for teaching, coaching and rowing and in 1976 became the Novice Crew Coach. Rowing and coaching were in her blood. She was lucky enough to work with her grandfather, mother, husband, daughter and son. Pam’s grandfather and mother were both previously inducted into the Hall of Fame. Her grandfather, Kenneth F. Burns, who founded the SHS Crew program and coached from 1937 until he passed away in 1982, was inducted posthumously in 1991. Her mother, Barbara Burns Caron, who was the first Girls Crew Coach and coached from 1975 until her retirement in 1994, was inducted in 2003. Pam coached Novice Crew until 1982 and in 1983 became the Boys Head Coach, a position she held for 20 years. For the last five years she has been coaching the Girls Crew team. She was also the Assistant Girls Gymnastics Coach from 1988-1990 and the Head Field Hockey Coach from 1988-1996.

In 1999, Pam was the recipient of the Quinsigamond Rowing Association (QRA) Award for her dedication to the sport. She received the MAHPERD Honors Award in 2000 for teaching Physical Education (PE). She even has a trophy named after her for the MA Public Championships.

Pam started the MA Public Championships and the New England Regionals for Crew. She has helped run many successful regattas. Her love for the sport keeps her active outside of coaching. She is past president of the QRA and still on the board. She is affiliated with the MAHPERD, AAHPERD for Physical Education, and she has a National Federation of Coaches Certificate. For many years she also ran the Shrewsbury Parks and Recreation Crew Program.

The highlight of her coaching career has been overseeing the development of hundreds of oarsmen over the years. She is currently a PE teacher at SHS, and Girls Crew Coach. She lives in Shrewsbury with her husband Russell. She has a daughter, Megan and son, Brian, daughter-in-law Sarah, and two beautiful grandchildren, Izaak and Aleksander.
